City of Excelsior
The City of Excelsior, located 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis on the southern shores of Lake Minnetonka, has a population of 2,397 residents. This small city attracts many visitors to its compact downtown and is well-defined by surrounding neighborhoods, Lake Minnetonka, and State Highway 7. In addition, the Southwest Regional Light Rail Transit Trail, used by bicyclists and walkers, passes through downtown Excelsior.
The City of Excelsior used a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota Active Community Planning grant to incorporate active living principles into their 2008 comprehensive plan update. The goal for this project is to encourage more active lifestyles with a particular focus on park and trail planning.
