James Charlier, AICP

James Charlier is principal of Charlier Associates, Inc., a multimodal transportation planning firm specializing in innovative approaches to improving mobility for states, towns, cities, counties, regional agencies and transit service providers interested in moving beyond traditional solutions and approaches.

Charlier has over thirty years experience in local, regional, and statewide planning projects across the country. He has held senior management positions at both the Iowa and Florida Departments of Transportation and served on the Florida Governor's Task Force on Urban Growth Patterns, as chairman of the Public Transit Committee. Since entering private practice in 1989, Charlier has provided planning services to clients in more than 12 states. He is regarded as an expert in the planning and design of pedestrian facilities.

In addition to government and consulting work, he is a frequent lecturer and facilitator on urban transportation planning challenges and opportunities. His professional affiliations include membership in the Congress for New Urbanism, the American Planning Association, and an advisory role for Livable Communities Support Center, a program associated with the Active Living Network.
