Kami Pothukuchi, Associate Professor of Urban Planning, Wayne State UniversityAssociate Professor, Urban Planning, Wayne State University

Kami Pothukuchi is an associate professor of urban planning at Wayne State University in Detroit , Michigan. Dr. Pothukuchi's research examines the links between food systems and the health of communities and regions, and the roles public and nonprofit agencies might play to foster these links.

Her papers explore the contributions of urban agriculture to neighborhood health, efforts to attract grocery supermarkets to underserved communities, local food policy's contributions to community development, community food assessment as a first step in food planning, and roles of local planners in improving access to healthy foods and enhancing food system sustainability. She has lectured nationally and internationally on community and regional food planning.

Recently, she co-authored a policy guide on community and regional food planning which was formally adopted by the American Planning Association (http://www.planning.org/policyguides/food.htm). This policy guide seeks to inform local food-planning and related federal and state policy advocacy. She is currently engaged in two research projects: one looks at successful retail grocery outlets in low-income communities for the lessons they offer for neighborhoods that are currently underserved; the other examines food safety practices of grocery stores in low income and minority communities.

Dr. Pothukuchi is also actively involved in grassroots efforts. She has served two terms on the governing board of the Community Food Security Coalition, a national organization that conducts policy advocacy, regional organizing, training and technical assistance, to promote community food security. She also volunteers with organizations engaged in community-food issues in Detroit and Ann Arbor , Michigan , and New Orleans , Louisiana .

Kami Pothukuchi is a keynote speaker for the Implementing Health into Planning event on September 14, 2007.
