City of Bloomington

Bloomington is located along the Minnesota River in the southwestern portion of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area with a population of approximately 86,000 residents and 100,000 jobs. The community is well balanced between residential, natural, commercial and industrial uses; in addition, over 35 percent of the City's 38.3 square miles is dedicated to parkland or open space.

The City of Bloomington is using funds from the BCBSMN Active Community Planning grant to undertake an Alternative Transportation Plan in conjunction with the City's next strategic plan, transportation plan, parks master plan and the 2008 comprehensive plan update.

Project Update:

Bloomington is working with Brauer & Associates on their Alternative Transportation Plan where they are focused on creating a transportation system through using a unique classification system and designing an enticing environment. The work from this project and plan will be incorporated into the City's comprehensive plan, particularly in the areas of land use, housing, and transportation.

In August, Bloomington residents received a survey focused on alternative transportation that was publicized in the local paper. Also, the City Council convened a citizen taskforce] for the Alternative Transportation Plan consisting of city planners, parks and recreation staff, public health experts, local business owners and election officials. Later this fall, a community open house will take place to allow for public review of the draft plan.
