Carver County is less than 30 miles west of Minneapolis. It has 11 cities, 11 townships, and 70,000 residents. The western portion of Carver County includes mainly rural areas with small community farms while the eastern side has more industry, larger communities, and a younger population.
Carver County is using funds from the BCBSMN Active Community Planning grant to incorporate active living principles into their 2030 comprehensive plan and to update the city and county parks and trails plan.
Project Update
Planners in the Carver County Division of Public Health and Division of Land & Water Services are leading this project and collaborating with the other county departments, including Parks, GIS, and the Community Development Agency, and are in partnership with planners from municipalities. The project aims to incorporate physical activity, safety, and accessibility into comprehensive plan elements including parks & trails, land use, transportation & economic development and housing. The project will also create a separate public health element. Working with Brauer & Associates, LTD, the county plans also to focus on the issue of county connectivity within the county parks & trails element and within city comprehensive plans. To increase community awareness of active living and promote walking by encouraging the use of existing trails, paths, parks and facilities, Public Health is working with cities to conduct Walkable Community Workshops to assess and plan for more pedestrian-friendly communities.
On October 3rd, Carver County is hosting an internal event for city and county planning staff where national speakers are coming to outline existing tools and tangible examples on how to incorporate active living principles into their comprehensive plans, zoning decisions, land use policies, and facility improvements. Specifically, the topics covered include active transportation, land use planning, trail systems, and conservation development.
