St. Paul comprises 56.2 square miles and has a population of 276,963 residents. The city is entirely built-up in the core of the seven-county metropolitan area and is surrounded by incorporated cities. The Mississippi runs through the city and also forms a border with Minneapolis to the west. Most of the city's neighborhoods are a mix of single-family and 2-4 unit buildings, with concentrations of higher density in downtown, along transit corridors and along the river. The city has an extensive system of parks and trials, from neighborhood to regional in scale.
The City of St. Paul is using funds from the BCBSMN Active Community Planning grant to assist with incorporating active living principles into its 2008 comprehensive plan update.
