Plan Case Studies
The following are examples of places integrating health and comprehensive planning.
- King County, Washington: County Comprehensive Plan Update
Rather than making a single Health Element, King County interspersed public-health objectives throughout their 2004 plan update, particularly in the chapters on "Urban Communities" and "Transportation."
- Fremantle, Western Australia: Physical Activity Strategic Plan 2005-2006
The City of Fremantle's Physical Activity Plan provides a framework and objectives to help the City plan, develop, implement, and evaluate physical activity programs and services.
- Riverside County, California: Livable Communities
Through this Department of Health program, the County of Riverside works with developers, local government officials and residents to encourage changes in the built environment that support a healthier county.
- State of Michigan: Promoting Active Communities
This program provides guidelines and an online assessment tool to Michigan communities to help them integrate active living into their plans, policies, and programs. Communities receive awards for participation and are able to move up the awards ladder as they improve. As of 2006, more than 70 communities had participated and received awards.
