Bicycle Parking and Bike Racks

The bicycle parking area at Millennium Park in downtown Chicago is a purpose-built facility.
Bike lanes are often used on urban streets because they allow users to have a roadway that is exclusively for their use; it encourages bicyclists to not ride on sidewalks; it provides a buffer for pedestrians using the sidewalks; and it promotes safety due to the separation of uses. Within bicycle planning there is some controversy over such lanes. Some think that cyclists should be full users of the road, and others promote off-road paths likely to be used by less-experienced riders.
The width of this brick sidewalk accommodates both pedestrians and bicyclists because it makes room for bike racks, security lighting, and signage through establishing both a clear zone and a furniture zone.
